Reference Range: Baseline cortisol: 1.0-5.0 ug/dL. ACTH post stimulation: 10-20 ug/dL. Values above 20 ug/dL in the post ACTH cortisol assay are suggestive of hyperadrenocorticism. However, these results are not specific for hyperadrenocorticism. Dogs with a variety of disease entities may have ACTH stimulation assay results in the same range as dogs with hyperadrenocorticism. The diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism must be further substantiated by appropriate clinical signs and other laboratory assay results. Baseline cortisol results that are low or below limit of detection which fail to increase with the administration of ACTH are consistent with hypoadrenocorticism.

T4 supplementation (Soloxine/L-Thyroxine) - sample should be drawn 3-8 hours post pill. If the dog is on a bid (twice daily) treatment the time of the sample is not important as long as it is greater than 3 hours and the hours post-pill is written on the form. If the dog is on SID (one a day) treatment, the sample can be drawn later than 8 hours and the hours post-pill written on the form.
T3 supplementation (Cytomel) sample should be drawn 2-3 hours post-pill. The dog should be on medication for one month before monitoring the therapeutic levels.Wait 14 days after a change in dose before checking again. To monitor the dog's own thyroid levels, it should be off supplementation for at least a month. If animal has already been receiving thyroid medication but they want to find out if it is hypothyroid, then withdraw thyroid medication for 4-6 weeks before re-testing. Nonspecific binding (NSB) can cause false positive TgAA results. If positive, we do an extra test to assess NSB and get an accurate result.
